Make the Most of Your Closets

Closets are one of the most-wanted features in a home, and sometimes one of the easiest to upgrade to add value. Can’t afford to upgrade your bathroom or your kitchen? Expand, add, or reorganize your closet spaces to both make your life easier and get a higher return on your investment when it’s time to sell in the future.

 

The goal here is to maximize the space you do have, using customization and organization. All closets could be organized better, even small ones. Consider adding a closet organization system to all of your closet spaces. What would that entail? Add built-in items like shoe racks, drawers, cubbies with bins, and multi-level hang bars. Is there a place to add a fold down ironing board? A full length mirror?

Perhaps there is currently wasted space above your hanging bars, if your ceilings are high. Add a high shelf to stack less-frequently used items or seasonal clothing. Current closet trends dictate throwing out excess and keeping things simple and organized. Can you add a small dresser in the closet — keeping this item out of the actual bedroom?

Consider upgrading your closet to a walk-in with more space. Think about reconfiguring a room to move a wall slightly to create the walk-in closet of your dreams. Or add a linen closet in a bathroom. An improvement like this can mean a quicker sale or a better price for home sellers.
